A Down-to-Earth Tour With Real Insight

Hello! I'm Alexandrea (Alex is fine) and this year I will be a junior. I am currently a HR & Labor Relations major but that isn't how it started out. I began my journey here as a Computer Science major and, trust me, there's a LOT you're going to want to know if you're going into CS or engineering here. But, more on me. I would say I am introverted. If you're going to find me anywhere, it's at home gaming or reading a good book. I do, however, enjoy exploring campus and finding the more hidden gems when it comes to food or a good walk. And this campus certainly has a lot of them. It can be overwhelming, transitioning here. Campus is huge and that can be extremely daunting. I promise to help you feel more comfortable with getting around, while also giving my honest opinions on campus and being a student here.

Describe your college experience

I would say the transition into college went really well for me due to two main things: the events and my roommate. My roommate was very outgoing and dragged me to all sorts of welcome events. When I was a freshman, I got a whole week before classes started to settle in, explore campus, and go to these events designed to make the transition easy. Everything else isn't always sunshine and rainbows, though. Sometimes getting around can be confusing, some classes can be in obscure places, some roads are randomly closed. You may also get very annoyed with how many events are happening at times as well.

Tip for future students

You may go in knowing what you want to do, and you may not. But either way, your decision might change and this is entirely okay. My advisors were nothing but helpful with all of my transitions, from major changes to minor changes. But my biggest recommendation is, no matter what, stay on top of the classes and requirements you have to do. You never want to get to senior year and be missing one class that stops you from graduating.

Favorite class

It was either IAH 221, or ISS 220. It was a class about humans and cities. It could be boring at times but it was so interesting learning about urbanization and how cities changed over time.

Career goals

I hope to get a few more degrees and certificates, but career wise, I hope to go into human resources with the goal of becoming a disability advocate for employees.

Ideal way to spend a free night

Curled up at home playing games on my PC or eating Insomnia cookie and watching something on TV.

High school or secondary school

Renaissance High School

Favorite spot on campus

I'd say my favorite spot varies on what exactly I'm doing. For light eating, the 1855 place is my favorite. There is a Starbucks and a giant "Sparty's" in there, so there's plenty of options for snacks. It's also a good study area if you need background noise. For heavier eating, Brody is definitely the best just for quality of food. For quieter studying, my favorite spot is usually "the lounge" which every floor of the dorms will have. Or the library.
