Experience of studying at a place older than our country

Hello, everyone! Welcome to Rutgers University! I’m your tour guide today, I am Jiayin, an undergraduate student learning mechanical engineering here. Many people often ask me, “What’s it like to study at Rutgers?” The answer is: it’s diverse, inclusive, and brimming with history and passion. Here, you’ll hear languages from all over the world, and no matter where you’re from or what your background is, you’ll quickly find a sense of belonging. Our first stop is the College Avenue Campus, where Rutgers’ history began. The building you see here is called Old Queens; it was built in the early 19th century, and our university was founded as early as 1766—a full ten years before the United States was even established! This place is steeped in a rich academic tradition and serves as the heart of our multicultural exchange. Look in the direction I’m pointing—right next door is the global headquarters of Johnson & Johnson. I’m sure you’ve all used Band-Aids before, right? In 1920, the Band-Aid was invented and manufactured right here in this city! Robert Wood Johnson, the visionary who later took Band-Aids global and laid the foundation for the Johnson & Johnson healthcare empire, was a distinguished alumnus of Rutgers—and our renowned medical school is named after him. It’s safe to say that Rutgers not only boasts a rich history but is also deeply rooted in this great city that transformed global healthcare and hygiene practices. If College Ave represents history, then Busch represents the future and vitality. This area is home to our top-tier engineering school, medical school, and research laboratories. But beyond rigorous academics, Busch also has a place that gets everyone’s blood pumping—SHI Stadium. Did you know? Rutgers is the birthplace of American football! The first-ever college football game in history took place right here in 1869. On game days, the entire campus transforms into a sea of red, with the whole university community cheering together—and that strong sense of unity is exactly what we’re most proud of at Rutgers!

Describe your college experience

Rutgers is a wonderful college, with four different campuses hiding different cultures behind them, and since the college is big, students will encounter various opportunities and meet different people. Also, there're so many amazing facilities such as rock climbing, etc in campus too

Tip for future students

Don't hesitate to try anything. Now is the best time to explore the world.

Favorite class

Eng Econ. It's really helpful for engineering students, cuz you gonna calculate how long the facility will be used and balence the cost at the same time. Very useful in real life

Career goals

maybe an aircraft test pilot

Ideal way to spend a free night

Staying at the corner of the room and read my favorite book, or spend whole night out to explore night city

Favorite spot on campus

Favourite spot should be Mabel Smith Douglass library. That library isn't just a library, but a mysterious place. Behind the library is a canyon with a tiny stream there. Studying in such site allowing people to feel smell of nature.
