An outgoing Communications Major who loves BYU's aims and campus!

Hi! I'm Rachel, a communication disorders major who loves BYU. I have always wanted to attend here, and the campus environment has been such a pleasant experience for me from Freshman year to now. I savor the BYU experience even as my life and time demands continue to change. I love to teach people about the layout, beautiful spots, and navigation strategies of BYU campus, as well as how they can personally succeed in their time here! I'm excited to get to know you and your guests.

Describe your college experience

My college experience at BYU has been wonderful. I have met great friends at several apartments, loved practically every professor, struggled through many classes, and I feel I have grown a lot because of all these things. My transition to college happened twice; once as a true freshman and then again after my mission. My experience has been enriched by devotionals, good friends, charitable teachers, and the BYU aims which are evident in all aspects of the university environment. I love being able to go here.

Tip for future students

Please talk to your TA's! Also, find a way to schedule your homework or budget your time in a way that works for you and will be motivating in some way. This could be a checklist, timers, reward-focused mindset, or having accountability while you work. I also wish I knew the importance of having a good support group. Making friends wherever you are will be your best defense and greatest joy throughout your college experience. Also, try to learn and understand rather than just get by. Think of questions, and try to listen and understand before taking notes.

Favorite class

There have been so many for different reasons! I absolutely loved my Ways of Reading class because of the deep-dive discussions we had each time. Our professor, Dr. Reed, was amazing at engaging us and probing our thoughts and conclusions. I also loved my Pearl of Great Price class with Philip Alred. He focused intently on the doctrine that is special to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Career goals

I hope to go to grad school and become a speech-language pathologist! This way I can work with children with special needs, to help them communicate better with their friends and family. I also will be able to work with adults who have injuries or disorders and want to regain their abilities to speak and understand the speech of their loved ones. I also plan to have a family, and raise them with much care and attention.

Ideal way to spend a free night

Probably talking and laughing with friends before bed, or going out on a walk together. We love to explore and try new things in the city center, and do creative adventures at our home. I also enjoy unwinding by reading and having a moment to think/meditate at some point before bed.

Favorite spot on campus

This is another hard question!! Outdoors, probably the sitting circles outside the JFSB where students sit and talk under the trees - or the scenic brick path that goes through hills and trees on West campus. My favorite indoor place is probably a tie between the third floor of the library and the peaceful halls of the Life Science Building. I love communal areas and spots of beautiful, peaceful nature.
