Your Go-To Guide for an Amazing BYU Experience

Hi, I'm Carter! I'm from Southern Oregon, and I am a freshman business major here at BYU. I came to college being pretty nervous and having no idea what to expect. However, BYU was exactly what I needed. I'd love to share with you the things that have helped me be successful and find joy as a student! You can usually find me around campus playing volleyball, basketball, or attending one of the many events/clubs that have free food! I love to spend time outside, and I love getting to know other people. My favorite sport is soccer; I love music and playing the piano. I also just returned from a full-time mission in Fiji. I'd love to help you feel at home on this campus, show you the best spots, and give any advice I can offer about how to make the most out of college, how to prioritize a balanced lifestyle, and most importantly how to find joy here at BYU!

Describe your college experience

College has been an amazing experience so far for me, it has really gotten me out of my comfort zone and given me some great experiences. The 4 pillars of BYU learning have really applied to me so far. 1. Spiritually Strengthening. I have so far seen myself grow spiritually while at BYU. Coming back from a mission, I was worried that I would experience a decrease in spiritual momentum, however I have only felt spiritual growth through weekly devotionals, family home evenings, and fellow students that have encouraged me to study the scriptures, attend the temple, and put God first. 2. Intellectually enlarging. I have learned so much from the classes I have taken at BYU, there is a lot of great interactive learning opportunities, and I have seen that my knowledge has grown and I have enjoyed learning. 3. Character Building. Through following the honor code, I have learned to be more responsible for my actions, and to always seek to represent the Savior Jesus Christ. BYU has taught me to develop attributes such as Charity and Integrity. 4. Lifelong Learning and Service. Before I came to BYU, I wondered where I fit in, and whether I would be able to achieve my goals while attending college. I have been amazed that through the classes, programs, wards, I have met and been led to so many amazing people, I feel that I have gained many lifetime friends and received so much support from those that have similar goals and standards as I do.

Tip for future students

Try new things, don't be afraid, and trust that the Lord will help you. I was so afraid before I started school, I wondered if I was smart enough, I wondered if I would have friends. I wish I knew that it is not as scary as sounds! Trying new things is so fun, and it is how you learn about yourself.

Favorite class

My favorite class so far has been Econ 110. While it has been a bit challenging at times, I have loved learning about the economy and learning how to notice economic trends. It is something that really interests me and has changed my current perspective on the world.

Career goals

I hope to have a family of my own, I also hope to begin my own business as a piano technician, focused on repairing and tuning pianos.

Ideal way to spend a free night

I really love to be with people! With a free night, I would love to do something outside with some friends, there are great options in Provo and on campus: play pickleball or basketball. I would also love to go up the canyon to go for a walk or to see a nice view. Eating is my favorite activity, so of course I would love to cook some food. If there was nobody to hang out with, I would spend some time playing the piano or the ukulele, I love music.

High school or secondary school

Riverton High School

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite place is the Marriot Center; I have received a lot of personal revelation from the weekly devotionals held there. I also love the Creamery on 9th, as well as the library.

Meeting point

Joseph F. Smith Building Courtyard on the Brigham Young University campus
