Fun engineering student from Australia whose favorite part of school is people.
Hi I’m Matthew from Australia, where most people call me Matty! I’m a civil engineering student who absolutely loves being at this school. BYU has ignited a love for learning I never knew was there. In the morning, you’ll see me playing basketball at the bottom of the hill. But you’ll usually find me studying in the library or wandering around campus looking for someone I know. I love how friendly everyone is around here! I’m excited to meet you all and show you the school I’ve loved for a long time. So make sure to shoot me any and every question you have and get ready for a great tour of an even greater school.

Describe your college experience
Back home, nobody enjoyed college. They would commute from home to get a degree as soon as possible and leave. School was boring. But being here at BYU, even if my classes are hard, has been so much fun. I love saying hi to strangers in the library. I love working in labs with new people, going to sports events, listening to music here, and making new friends. All this, and the inclusion of God in every aspect of school has made my transition incredible.
Tip for future students
Get out there, do something social. School will always be there in the morning, but the opportunities to create real relationships might not be.
Favorite class
Writing 150 was my favorite because of the opportunity to be creative and have in depth discussions with teachers and peers. I was extremely proud of the work I had created.
Career goals
I want to build temples for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
Ideal way to spend a free night
My ideal night is spent with the people I love. It’s a chance to forget about school for a couple of hours and get together. I love meeting new people this way. My highlights always include some sort of physical activity. Get a spike-ball net out and I’m good for hours. And recently, I’ve been spending more nights practicing music with friends.

Favorite spot on campus
I love studying on the 2nd 3rd or 4th floor of the library. It keeps me in the zone to study effectively. It also provides periodical, and needed breaks when friends walk by and stop for a chat.
