Aussie transfer student who loves BYU.
Hi! My name is Sydney Smith, I am a transfer student form Melbourne, Australia and am currently studying a major in Acting and a minor in Mandarin, Chinese. I served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Taiwan, Taipei Mission and love studying at a university that embraces living the gospel of Jesus Christ. Apart from my classes, I also enjoy running, karate, playing the violin and hiking with friends! In 2022, my family and I came to visit BYU and participated in a campus tour, and we absolutely loved it! Touring BYU campus helped spark my desire to study here, and it has been 100% worth it!

Describe your college experience
After returning from my mission to Taiwan, I transferred to Brigham Young University at the beginning of Summer term 2026, and have thoroughly enjoyed my experience so far! I love the gospel-centred teaching and living on campus in Heritage Halls. During the Summer term I took a Chinese and a Psychology (general ed) class. Now I am currently taking an Acting, Chinese, Religion, International Student + SWELL Martial Arts class.
Tip for future students
Contact your career/academic advisors early and book appointments to help select classes. Join clubs and attend activities to pursue your interests and make new friends. Reach out to others and be open to meeting new people. Your friends can become a great source of support with not only academics but also every aspect of your life.
Favorite class
Chinese class because I love learning about the language, people and culture. I also served a mission in Taiwan, Taipei so I enjoy speaking the language as often as I can.
Career goals
I hope to become a screen-actor and/or get into the film industry. I also would love to use my Mandarin skills in my career, potentially try working in the chinese-film industry. I have also considered becoming a teacher
Ideal way to spend a free night
My ideal way to spend a free night would be to go out to a restaurant together with friends and then afterwards hang out in the dorm playing board games.
High school or secondary school
The Knox School
Previous college
Deakin University
Favorite spot on campus
The BYU Botany Pond on the southern end of campus, because it is a peaceful place in nature to relax and watch the ducks + other wildlife. It is a nice spot to escape the business of campus life.
Meeting point
