I am an energetic people person who has spent over 4 years on BYU campus

Howdy! I’m a senior in BYU’s Experience Design and Management program, and my BYU story actually started on the track and cross country team, where I came in on a full-ride scholarship to run for one of the best programs in the country. I’ve gotten to build my college experience twice: first as an athlete with a built-in team and a set path, and then again after a career-ending injury forced me to relearn how to “do college”—meeting new people, finding new places, and discovering campus all over again from scratch. That’s given me a pretty well-rounded view of BYU. I can talk Cougar athletics and the electric energy of the ROC student section as easily as I can show you the hidden pull-up bars tucked behind the SFH that most students never find. I’m originally from Idaho, and I bring a lot of warmth, energy, and genuine curiosity to every conversation. I love nothing more than helping people see BYU through fresh eyes, whether it’s their first visit or the start of their next four years.

Clubs, organizations & involvement

I have been part of several different clubs. I was part of the track and cross country teams of course. I also participated in the Baja club which designs and builds a competition ready single person off-roading vehicle. I was a photographer for an indie band for a time. I’m looking at getting into programs that help Spanish speakers learn English or need help with translation as well. I’ve also been part of several intermural sports like football and ultimate frisbee.

Describe your college experience

I started out as a true freshman on scholarship running for the track and cross country teams. I lived at heritage my first year and met all new people with whom I am still friends with today. Being a collegiate athlete really helped me learn time management between classes, tests, and practice. It also showed me all the resources available to students and athletes alike. I continued to run after my mission to Honduras and had some great success until a career ending injury. Which led to meet new people and have a completely different collage experience outside of athletics. Classes are challenging but great! So many amazing people to meet. In fact, I even met my wife on campus in finance class. Currently in my senior year I’m excited to learn even more and prepare for the real world.

Tip for future students

Make lots of friends in all your classes. Take advantage of study groups and TAs. Look for opportunities to take fun classes along with the tougher ones. Don’t get too caught up in getting everything perfect and rather enjoy the experience.

Favorite class

One of my favorite classes I took was ExDM 300: Creating a Good Life. This class taught me key indicators on how to design and facilitate happiness and joy not only within my personal life but in my professional life as well. Based on psychology and many different studies we learned how to be successful in those aspects.

Career goals

I’ve done quite a few different types of jobs in my life so far but eventually I would like to take the entrepreneurial route. Either by starting or acquiring a business.

Ideal way to spend a free night

Going out to eat with friends and dancing with my wife and then watching a movie with some homemade popcorn and yummy drinks.

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite spot on campus is actually a set of pull-up bars behind the tennis courts by the Smith Field House. I’ve completed many workouts there and is typically pretty vacant which I like. It provides a peaceful environment to help one think through their thoughts.
