Nerdy Pre-Med to Help You Prep for Day One!

Helloo! My name is Roland, and I found myself falling happily into the pre-med track, majoring in molecular and cellular biology. I love STEM through and through, and San Diego has become my home away from home. I hope my insights could help another kid like me find their way to sunny La Jolla, California!

Clubs, organizations & involvement

I've found a place for myself in the Pre-Med community, volunteering at shelters and community centers to help the unhoused population of SD. I particularly am close with Circle K International and Hearts 4 The Homeless. In my free time I spend it at Board Games and Boba, where I've met many friends.

Describe your college experience

It was a little difficult shifting my whole life to the south, but I've enjoyed the community and the amazing academics which brought me here.

Tip for future students

My biggest tip would be to utilize office hours and SI as much as possible. Lectures can tend to let many slip through the cracks for actually understanding the material, so finding time to meet one-on-one with the instructional team can do wonders for your learning and success.

Favorite class

My favorite class was the biology undergraduate lab because it involved so many new technologies to understand biological concepts taught in the lecture halls. Applying the concepts from genetics, the central dogma, chemistry, and evolution was fascinating to do in a lab setting.

Career goals

I am currently bound for either Med School or PA School. I hope to spend my last half of my undergraduate career accruing clinical hours, research experience, and defining myself for those applications.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night is to cook dinner and watch a show with my partner, since finding free time for both of our schedules can be difficult.

High school or secondary school

Lowell High School

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite spot on campus is the fifth floor balcony of the RWAC. It has a beautiful view of the Pacific and paragliders at Gliderport, and it's a great atmosphere for studying or having lunch (albeit a bit windy at times).

Meeting point

Triton Fountain on the University of California San Diego campus
