Pre-med student who loves the gym and exploring Athens

Hi! I’m Sven, a sophomore at the University of Georgia majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology on the pre-med track. When I’m not studying, you’ll probably find me at the gym, exploring Athens with friends, or relaxing with a good movie. I enjoy meeting new people, trying new experiences, and making the most of my time at UGA. I’m always happy to chat, answer questions about campus, or share some of my favorite local spots!

Describe your college experience

Transitioning to college was both exciting and challenging. During my first year at the University of Georgia, I had to adjust to a faster-paced academic environment while learning how to manage my time and study more effectively. Although the transition was not always easy, it taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of seeking help when needed. Beyond the classroom, I have become involved in research, volunteered with organizations serving my local community, and have been actively pursuing clinical opportunities to explore different areas of medicine. These experiences have helped me grow both academically and personally, while reinforcing my desire to become a physician. Looking back, my first year has given me a strong foundation, and I am excited to continue building on it throughout the rest of my college career.

Tip for future students

My biggest piece of advice is to stay organized and avoid falling behind, especially in your science courses. College moves much faster than high school, and reviewing material consistently is much easier than trying to learn everything before an exam. I also encourage new students to get involved early. Join organizations, volunteer, explore research opportunities, and don’t be afraid to ask professors questions or attend office hours. College is about much more than earning good grades—it’s also about building relationships, discovering your interests, and taking advantage of opportunities that help you grow.

Favorite class

My favorite class so far has been Biology 1108. It was the first class where I felt like I was moving beyond memorizing facts and instead understanding how different biological systems work together. Topics such as cell signaling, genetics, and physiology showed me how molecular processes translate into human health and disease. What I enjoyed most was applying concepts to solve problems rather than simply recalling information. That approach made biology much more engaging and reinforced my interest in pursuing medicine. The class also strengthened my confidence in science, and earning an A- motivated me to continue challenging myself with upper-level biology and biochemistry courses.

Career goals

After college, I plan to attend medical school and pursue a career as a physician. I hope to combine patient care with a lifelong commitment to learning and, if possible, continue participating in research to help improve treatments and advance medical knowledge. While I am still exploring different specialties through clinical experiences and shadowing, my goal is to make a meaningful impact on my patients and the communities I serve.

Ideal way to spend a free night

If I have a free night and I’m caught up on schoolwork, I like to start by going to the gym to unwind after a busy day. After that, I enjoy spending time with friends, whether that means trying a new restaurant, exploring downtown Athens, attending a campus event, or just hanging out, playing games, or watching a movie together. Having a balance between academics, staying active, and spending time with friends helps me recharge and keeps me motivated.

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite place on campus is the Science Library. It is a quiet environment where I can focus without distractions, whether I am studying for exams, working on assignments, or reading research articles. As a biochemistry major, I spend a lot of time there because it has the resources I need and is conveniently located near many of my classes. It has become my go-to study spot and a place where I feel the most productive.
