Third-year genetics major giving prospective Bulldogs the inside scoop on UGA!
Hi! My name is Deveny Gilmore and I am a junior genetics major, human services minor, on a pre-genetic counselor track. I moved from Houston, TX to Athens, GA knowing no one, and it was the best decision I've ever made! I am involved in a little bit of everything on campus, from greek life to leisure sports to the honors college to volunteer programs to academics. Anything you're intrested in, I have answers about, or at the very least I know someone who does. Athens has become my new home and I know all the cool spots, I'd be happy to let you in the know about a few. Picking a college was hard for me becasue I am so indecisive (I applied to 12 schools - very indecisive). I absolutely understand wanting to know UGA inside and out - and I can help!

Describe your college experience
Coming to UGA from out of state and knowing very few people that went here, I was very scared for my freshman year. This school has been a perfect fit for me and I love it for so many reasons. The work hard play hard mentality is an environment I really shine in. My friends and classmates inspire me to work hard, but also show the importance of being laid back and not stressing. Athens is the best city in the world and provides the college with everything a student could want. I feel propperly challenged in my academics and supported by my peers.
Tip for future students
Stay as approachable as possible to everyone you meet and try to get out of your bubble! I became a completely new person between my senior year of high school and the end of freshman year at UGA because I met so many amazing people I never thought I would be friends with. Southern hospitality is real and it is so easy to meet people like you in college! Always be willing to add someone into your circle.
Favorite class
My favorite class that I've taken at UGA is either my Counseling courses because the information is very applicable to my every day life, or Genetics 3000 because my professor was amazing.
Career goals
I will be pursuing my masters degree in genetic counseling after graduation. I aim to be a genetic counselor helping families with a history of rare genetic diseases and cancer.
Ideal way to spend a free night
My ideal way to spend a free night is with my friends. I really enjoy hosting people and cooking for them or going to a gathering with people I know and don't know.
High school or secondary school
Memorial High School
Favorite spot on campus
My favorite spot on campus is the Trial Gardens or the lawn in north campus! They both are so beautiful and provides an excellent spot to hang out with friends before class.
