UCSB/Santa Barbara local balancing Greek life, teaching yoga, and pilot training

Hi! I’m Campbell, a Communication major from Santa Barbara who loves meeting new people and getting involved on campus. I’m a yoga instructor, pilot in training, and enjoy spending my free time scuba diving, hanging out with my sorority sisters, finding sunset spots and exploring everything UCSB has to offer. I love sharing my enthusiasm for the university and helping others feel excited about becoming part of the UCSB community.

Describe your college experience

Transitioning to college was a big change, but UCSB quickly started to feel like home. Since I went to high school in Santa Barbara, I was already familiar with the area, but college gave me the opportunity to experience it in a completely new way and meet people from all over the world. In my freshman year I’ve grown so much in my confidence and independence and looking back, coming to UCSB has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Tip for future students

My biggest tip for future students is to say yes to new opportunities, even if they’re outside your comfort zone. Join clubs, go to campus events, and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to new people—you never know what friendships or experiences might come from it. College goes by quickly, so make the most of everything UCSB has to offer.

Favorite class

One of my favorite classes at UCSB was called Rome: The Game. Even though it was online, it was incredibly interactive because it followed a choose-your-own-adventure format that made me feel immersed in the subject of Italian architecture and art. My professor was clearly passionate about the subject, and that enthusiasm made the class even more engaging. Instead of memorizing history I felt like I was experiencing it, which kept me excited to learn each week. The class showed me how much a great presenter can make a topic come alive, and it’s something I’d love to bring to my role as a campus tour guide.

Career goals

I’m still undecided about my long-term career path, but I’m passionate about both business and aviation. As a Communication major, I’m interested in marketing, entrepreneurship, and building creative brands, but I’m also working toward becoming a private pilot with the goal of potentially flying commercially. I’m excited to keep exploring both interests and see where my experiences at UCSB lead me.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night is being with friends, whether that’s watching the sunset at the beach, grabbing dinner, or just hanging out. I also love staying active, so sometimes that means teaching or taking a yoga class or planning my next scuba diving adventure. For me, the best nights are the simple ones spent with good people.

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite spot on campus is the trail above Campus Point beach. I love it because as every evening that I go I’m accompanied by many others making their way down to the bluff to watch the beautiful sunset. Whenever I go there, I see friends and people I know without fail. It’s one of those places that reminds me how special UCSB is and always makes me feel connected to the people around me. It’s the perfect way to end the day.
