Hello! My name is Alessandra and I am a native Mainer who is a sophomore at Bates, studying Earth Sciences and Chemistry. On campus I am a Teaching Assistant for in classroom learning, an academic and presentation tutor through the Student Academic Support Center, and I have experience working in labs on campus (both during the school year and the summer). Along with these experiences, I am also a LAMP Fellow, which is a paid position that involves supporting the Student Academic Support Center staff, along with attending trainings every week freshman year that are meant to help us better support fellow students and on campus workers.

Describe your college experience

I have had an amazing experience at Bates so far, but I also recognize that college is what you make it, and it experiences heavily depend on what you surround yourself and the effort you put into the experience.

Tip for future students

When looking at colleges or preparing to head to a college, come with ideas of what you want to do, but do not be afraid to abandon your plans - college is a whole new world, and doing what is best for you instead of what is best for your plan is how you will make the most of your time here.

Favorite class

Environmental Geochemistry has been my favorite class so far! We were able to go out into the field and collect our own samples, producing real results in the lab that gave information to the public about the health of a local stream. As a class we then presented a group poster at a conference, sharing our data and gaining valuable experience.

Career goals

After getting my undergraduate degree I hope to pursue higher education, and eventually get a job that is a mix of scientific work with producible results, and working with other people - both colleagues and clients.

Ideal way to spend a free night

Bates has a lot of activities that are free for students to attend, from weekly concerts to spaghetti dinners - a free night is usually filled up fast!

My favorite spot on campus is the quad - it sports great weather and even better people watching! You are bound to see a tandem bike or two at any given moment.
