Hi, I’m Avery! I am a student at the University of Colorado Boulder studying Political Science and Public Health with a minor in Military Science. I’m passionate about understanding how policy impacts communities, especially in areas like healthcare, environmental justice, and civic engagement. Outside of academics, I’m involved in student leadership, advocacy, and community outreach programs, and I enjoy finding ways to connect with and learn from the people around me.

Describe your college experience

I transferred to the University of Colorado Boulder after starting college in Chicago, and the transition has been a really positive experience. Moving to a new state and adjusting to a different campus environment challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, but I have loved getting involved and building a community in Boulder. I’ve enjoyed exploring my interests in political science, public health, and civic engagement while taking advantage of the many opportunities CU Boulder offers.

Tip for future students

My biggest tip for future students is to be open to new experiences and not be afraid to put yourself out there. Some of the best parts of my college experience have come from getting involved, meeting new people, and taking opportunities outside of my comfort zone. I also wish I had known that it is okay if your path changes—college is a time to explore your interests and find what truly matters to you.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been Gender and Protest because it challenged me to think critically about how social movements, identity, and political systems shape each other. I enjoyed learning how individuals and communities have used advocacy and collective action to create change throughout history. The class connected closely with my interests in public policy, civic engagement, and understanding how people influence the decisions that impact their lives.

Career goals

After college, I hope to pursue a career in law and public service focused on creating meaningful policy change. I am interested in becoming a JAG officer and eventually attending law school to continue working at the intersection of government, advocacy, and public policy. My goal is to use my education and experiences to serve communities and help develop policies that improve people’s lives.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal free night would be hosting a dinner party with friends, cooking a meal together, and spending the evening having good conversations. I love creating a welcoming space where people can connect, share stories, and enjoy time together.

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite spot on campus is Farrand Field because it’s a great place to relax, spend time with friends, and enjoy the views of campus and the Flatirons. I love that it feels like a central gathering place where people can take a break, socialize, and appreciate the beauty of Boulder.
