Describe your college experience

I started college as a commuter from Wilmington. Although it was a different experience than many of my peers, there were a lot of financial benefits, and I got to leave campus whenever I wanted. Academically, I had to figure out how to translate the studying skills I acquired in high school and use them to succeed in the classroom. For my junior year and beyond, I will be a Resident Assistant for the University and live on campus!

Tip for future students

One tip I wish I had gotten before becoming a college student was understanding that the grades one receives in their first year do not define their entire academic trajectory. GPA is a significant determinant of academic success, but it is not the end-all, be-all of one's time in college. A UD-specific piece of advice I wish I had before starting would have been knowing good spots on campus to study.

Favorite class

This past spring semester, I took an introductory archaeology class (ANTH 103). It is not a class needed for my major, but it fulfilled a breadth requirement. I initially thought it would be a filler course in my schedule. After the first few classes, I watched the number of students who attended class dwindle because they thought the same thing. This was odd to me because of how deeply interesting the course content was; the professor had been a field archaeologist for many decades before picking up teaching, and I was fascinated by the anecdotes he shared in conjunction with lecture slides about his findings. The correlations of his stories to broader concepts in archaeology, combined with shining a light on some of the inequities present in the field, exposed me to an area of science I had not thought much about, and I am grateful for the experience.

Career goals

I hope to attend a biostatistics graduate program and earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in biostatistics or a Master of Science (MS). From there, I would like to work in a hospital setting as a biostatistician, analyzing medical data.

Ideal way to spend a free night

Newark offers a multitude of parks, many of which are within walking distance of campus. I enjoy going to the Newark Reservoir for a walk at sunset with my friends or playing a game at one of the facilities in the small sports complex across the street.
