Hi! My name is Max Nowicki and I'm a rising sophomore at Georgetown studying Business and Global Affairs in the Izmirlian joint-degree program between the McDonough School of Business and the Walsh School of Foreign Service. I'm originally from the Chicago area, and moved for the first time for college. I'm very interested in economics, finance, international affairs, and philosophy, and during my time at Georgetown I've been able to explore all of these interests both inside and outside of the classroom. When I'm not in class or studying, I enjoy watching sports (especially soccer and football), skiing, hiking, and reading.

Describe your college experience

The first time I moved was for college, bringing with it a wave of changes. I had to get used to a new place, new schedule, and new people all at once for the first time. Thankfully, Georgetown provided a ton of opportunities to get to know people during the first few weeks of the year, and I found even in class people were eager to get to know you and make friends. As I settled into my freshman year, I was consistently impressed with how academically engaged my fellow students were, and relished being in such a intellectually stimulating environment.

Tip for future students

Georgetown often feels like a highly pre-professional school. Many people here already seem to be set on a career in finance, law, or politics, and are already aggressively pursuing pathways to those careers. Despite this, this doesn't make Georgetown a bad place to be if you're not sure what you want to do. On the contrary, it gives you tons of exposure to different career paths early which allows you to figure out what you like and don't like, allowing you to then focus on the path that truly interests you.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been my Global Markets class. It was incredibly interesting to analyze and discuss the relationship between globalization and economic development in both developing and developed countries. We explored how companies react to changing economic and regulatory conditions, and how politics and regulation in turn react to that. I loved the interdisciplinary nature of the course, and believe it exemplifies exactly the content and teaching style Georgetown seeks to cultivate.

Career goals

I hope to work in finance to develop my career skills further including financial modeling, analysis, and understanding of markets. In the long term I would like to focus on international business, either with multinational corporations or for international development organizations.

Ideal way to spend a free night

I loved hanging out with friends, whether it was going out for dinner and exploring DC or just hanging out in the dorm listening to music or watching a movie.
