Senior University of Delaware: (nutrition maj.) Outgoing and well involved
Hello! My name is Owen Spahr and I'm originally from the great state of Wisconsin. I came to Delaware to Row on the mens crew team and study kinesiology. In the process of growing and learning here at Delaware I've changed my major twice, joined the Army National Guard, Rowed for three years, joined the ROTC program, and made lifelong friends from across the world. Delaware is a truly special school because of all the opportunities and its people! I know the campus and area like the back of my hand so lets talk college as I show you around our beautiful campus!

Describe your college experience
Since I was relatively independent before college the transition was not as hard as it is for most. I'm used to being away from home and having to be self sufficient so taking care of myself wasn't so hard. The biggest shift for me was learning to balance practices twice a day and a heavy college course load. When I moved off campus and no longer had a meal plan cooking and shopping for myself completely was also another thing I had to get used to. My experience in college has been a very positive one. My teammates, fellow ROTC cadets, friends, cadre, and school faculty all care about me and my success.
Tip for future students
Start looking for housing/find people to live with early! I signed a lease for Sophmore year my second week at school as a Freshman. Housing can be really expensive if you don't seek out good spots early enough. Talk to people and introduce yourself constantly. To people in your classes, people playing football on the green, in the gym. Get to know people to grow your community and your circle. Alot of people are scared of having a bad roommate or not making any friends. College is real life, if you don't seek out what you want you aren't going to get it. Your mom isn't going to make you join a team or call for a playdate. If you want to make friends meet your neighbors in the dorms and spend time outside talking to others! Lastly, use your teachers. What I mean is, there are so many things set up for you to succeed as a student here at UD and your professors want you to be successful. Be polite in person and over email. Talk to them in person, engage in class and discussions, answer and ask questions. Build a relationship with your peers and professors and doors will open left and right for you. Reach out when you need help and study! Chat GPT isn't learning.
Favorite class
I've had a few favorite classes with amazing professors but my standout one was nutrition counseling. Professor Andrea Grim is the dept. head of Nutrition and Dietetics and is my favorite professor who I've had multiple times. This class was very hands on in practicing how to speak to patients of all backgrounds to understand their situation, inform them, and help treat the issues they are dealing with. This class opened my eyes to what I really want to do with my nutrition major.
Career goals
When I graduate I will commission into the Wisconsin Army National guard as a 2nd lieutenant officer. After my training concludes I plan on attending graduate school to be able to sit for the RD exam to become a registered dietician.
Ideal way to spend a free night
If I have a free night I love to play sports with my friends and go out to eat on main street. occasionally we will grab a drink from Deerpark but nothing crazy I'm strict about my bed time.
