Describe your college experience

I was not entirely sure what to expect in college, but I was more excited and frightened. As a child growing up in Asia, everything I knew about American colleges was from movies, which didn't give it a good rep. I wanted to be responsible but also have fun. When I came to UD, I had trouble balancing classes and fun. But then I got involved in the Honors College, started volunteering more, and also started working at UD, and this helped me stay on track and be more responsible with my time at UD. I took time to get to know my professors and the resources I have to help me, and I relied on my friends. All this made me feel part of a supportive community. I still managed to have fun with friends, attending events put together by UD clubs and organizations. All of this makes me want to help prospective students feel excited about becoming Blue Hens.

Tip for future students

Get involved early, even if it can feel intimidating. There are many research opportunities at UD, even for freshmen. Look through all the research labs listed under your department, or ask the professors about research opportunities. I cold-emailed 5 labs during the winter break of freshman year and secured a summer internship. For some social advice, I would suggest that new students talk to as many people as they can during the first week, because it can be difficult to find people who really get them. Building friendships and finding your place takes time; don't give up because everyone feels that way. It's all about trial and error in college.

Favorite class

My favorite class has to be my introductory neuroscience course because it confirmed that I was on the right path. I was so excited to learn about everything taught in class and would also attend office hours to discuss more with my professor. It was an Honors class and had fewer than 30 students, so we all became really close too. The class was both challenging and intriguing, which made it much different from the class I took in high school. A lot of the courses that I've taken after that are similar but more challenging. This class was great for getting used to college-level classes and the expectations.

Career goals

I want to be a physician specializing in neurology or neurosurgery. I'm really passionate about understanding the brain and improving treatments for patients. I also want to be involved in neurological research and help develop new treatments. On a personal level, I want to be able to help my parents retire and help me get my siblings through college as well.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My free night would be spending time with my friends, like getting dinner and walking around Main Street. If the weather is nice, we like to go on picnics where we hangout and work together. If it's late, I like to work on my creative hobbies like making jewelry, drawing or bedazzling.
