Describe your college experience

My college experience has been one I’m never going to forget. You’re so nervous until you get there, and then it gets easier. You adjust, acclimate to a new type of living. Lots of students have never been on their own before, and that’s okay. College will help you learn how to make connections, meet people, and prepare you for the world, no matter what your plans are after college. This is exactly what it’s been doing for me the past 3 years, I have become far more self reliant as well as confident in my abilities to handle myself and my life as a college student. I haven’t personally been involved in Greek life but I’ve never felt like I’ve been missing out. Everything that I wanted out of a college I get here at CU Boulder. I have had some really, truly brilliant professors here, who have made me into the psychology student I am today. CU’s psychology program was a huge reason I knew Boulder was for me. These teachers are here to share information with you that excites them too, not that they’re just paid to teach you. I live in my own apartment now, but dorm life wasn’t a bad experience. Yes, someone blew up a washer and a microwave in my dorm hall, but that’s all part of dorm life. Nobody has everything figured out as a freshman and that’s okay. You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Tip for future students

Try to get your laundry done on a random week day, as the majority of students tend to do it on Saturday or Sunday. Even if you don’t feel like it, go to the event that CU flyer is advertising. That’s what I did, how I made friends and how I drove a race car. Yes, CU has a race team. Go for it. Try everything, keep pushing. I was a freshman yesterday and now I’m less than a year from graduating with a bachelors in psychology. College moves fast. So fast. Make sure to stop and look around every once in a while.

Favorite class

My favorite class so far was a class I took the second semester of my freshman year, intro to cognitive psychology. The teacher, professor Roland Benoit, was by far the best professor I’ve ever had. He explained things in such a way that, even if you didn’t care for psychology, you couldn’t help but be entranced by his methods. He made learning fun, actually exciting. It was no easy class, I ended up with a 60 page hand written review for the final. But, through my hard work I ended that class with a 99.98. It’s one of my proudest achievements. Also, if you’re taking cognitive psychology, I cannot recommend Prof. Benoit more.

Career goals

After college I hope to get my master’s degree in counseling psychology. I, like every single other college student in the entire world, have dealt with mental health issues, and have had to learn different ways to cope, primarily through therapy. I’ve been going to therapy since 4th grade, and eventually I realized I wanted to be what my therapist was to me to other people. I knew I wanted to help others understand and manage the things I’ve struggled with myself pretty much from day one.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night is to kick back and relax. I work two jobs, so even during the summer my schedule is pretty packed. So, coming home after a long day to my dog and cat and unwinding is pretty great. I’m always open to a night out with my girlfriend or friends, there are an endless amount of viewpoints and things to do in Boulder. You will never find yourself bored. I myself am not into partying, but I think CU Boulder is rated pretty high in some top party school list, so if that’s your thing, there is absolutely no shortage of that here. However you like to spend your nights, you’ll be able to spend them that way here.
