Hi there! My name is Maya and I am currently an R-T-F sophomore. As a lower classman, I still can resonate with the small fears and big questions of incoming students while also being equipped to solve them. Everyone is welcome here and I’d love to share my perspective of our beautiful campus.

Describe your college experience

My transition to college was considerably smooth. It’s notable that I am a huge pre-planner, so that could be part of the reason, but also UT staff and student communities are so welcoming and patient when it comes to incoming students. Even if times were a little nerve racking or stressful, there was never a moment where I thought I was alone or had no one to go to. Out campus has so many helpful recourses

Tip for future students

DON’T stress about housing. So many people around here fear monger about living situations. I’m telling you - students and parents - do NOT panic and sign a $3k​/​mo lease. The dorms are not as competitive as people say, and with apartments there are sooo many more options than you might think. Let’s have a good conversation about it, and I can ease all your fears.

Favorite class

I surprisingly really enjoyed my UGS class. What is that you ask? “Undergraduate Study Class.” It’s a requirement for all students, typically completed fall or spring semester of your freshman year. It’s basically an introductory college class. You choose one out of what are offered, typically based on what interests you. The coursework is really broken down to make everything comprehensible and the teachers help guide you through everything. My UGS was “sleep studies” and both the course content and professor were amazing; I highly recommend it if you can get it into your schedule.

Career goals

I’ve recently decided to try to pursue a graduate program in South Korea, after graduating from UT. I will aim for a masters degree in the film area, hoping to shape my education towards the Korean film and television style while hopefully making industry connections there as well.

Ideal way to spend a free night

During the semesters, I loved having a club​/​organization to go to, even if it was something seemingly random. I joined Texas Ballroom for one semester, just to learn something new, and it was so much fun even though I don’t have any reason to know how to ballroom dance. Also, once you find a friend or two on campus, I really loved just walking with them around the campus at night, admiring the soft evening bustle.
