USC Business of Cinematic Arts Student from Vancouver | Greek & Campus Life

Hi! I'm Dan, a sophomore at USC studying Business of Cinematic Arts. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, I attended St. George's School before moving to Los Angeles for college. I'm a big soccer and baseball fan, passionate about film production and visual effects, and in my free time like to DJ genres such as house, EDM, and country. On campus, I'm involved in Greek life, several film clubs and a wide range of campus activities, so I'm happy to share insights on academics, student life, housing, and getting involved on campus. Whether you're curious about USC, the film and entertainment industry, or what it's like to move away from home for college, I'd love to help answer your questions and give you an honest look at the USC experience!

Describe your college experience

My college experience so far has been very transformative. Living independently from my parents, I’ve found that time goes by so fast when you’re out in the sun with your friends between classes on weekdays and getting to see them all the time. There’s a lot more self-studying and independent work compared to high school, and I’ve had to learn a lot of self-control to stay on top of everything. Overall, after my first year, I understand what people mean by the phrase “time flies when you’re having fun.” USC is a big play-hard work-hard school, and by putting in the effort during the day I get to go out and have a good time with my friends later.

Tip for future students

School is so much more than the classes. The biggest resource you will have at university are the people around you that will go on to do great things. Be a social person and try your best to make genuine connections with everybody.

Favorite class

ACCT-280 with Prof. Stice-Lawrence has been my favourite class. It was challenging at times, but I liked how straightforward and practical it was because everything we learned felt like it had real-world use. For example, I can look at a tax form and financial statements now and understand most of what's going on. Professor Stice-Lawrence was also a very supportive teacher that challenges you in class and is always available to help you when needed. The class also gave me a solid foundation for thinking about the business side of film and entertainment.

Career goals

I’m really passionate about the film industry, and I’d love to work as a producer one day. If that doesn’t end up being the path I take, I’m also really interested in marketing and distribution, with the goal of working at companies like A24, Sony, or Paramount. Outside of film, I’m into DJing as a hobby and would love to keep growing that and maybe even play some gigs here and there.

Ideal way to spend a free night

It’s either going out with friends for a bonfire or a party, or just staying in and watching a good sci-fi movie. I like having a good balance between fun and having chill nights.
