University of South Carolina
Economics student at USC | Finance-focused | Fraternity member | Maine native
Hey! I’m Carson, a sophomore at the University of South Carolina studying Economics with a minor in Philosophy. I’m originally from Kittery Point, Maine, and came to USC for its strong business community and vibrant campus culture. I’m involved in the Carolina Fund (our student-led investment group), Beta Theta Pi, and I have an upcoming internship in wealth management. I’d love to give you an honest look at life at USC. The good, the social, and the academic.

Describe your college experience
Coming to USC from a small town in Maine was a big shift, but one I’d make again in a heartbeat. The campus energy, the opportunities through organizations like the Carolina Fund, and the connections I’ve made through Greek life made the transition feel natural pretty quickly. Academically, the Economics program has pushed me in the best way. I went in thinking I’d just take classes, and ended up doing real equity research by sophomore year.
Tip for future students
Get involved early and don’t wait until you feel “ready.” I joined the Carolina Fund and Beta Theta Pi in my first year, and those two decisions shaped most of my best experiences here. Also, go to office hours. Professors at USC are genuinely accessible.
Favorite class
My favorite class so far has been HIST 108: Science and Technology in Western History. It’s not what you’d expect from a history course. The professor challenges you to rethink the entire Western narrative of scientific progress, covering everything from ancient astrology and alchemy to quantum mechanics and AI. It completely changed how I think about knowledge and where ideas come from. If you’re at USC, take it.
Career goals
I’m working toward a career in finance, likely wealth management or investment research. I have an internship lined up at this summer, and I’m hoping to build toward roles in portfolio management or equity research longer term.
Ideal way to spend a free night
Probably a low-key night watching a Celtics or Red Sox game, grabbing food somewhere on Main Street, or hanging with the brothers. If the weather’s good, you’ll find me outside. I also spend a fair amount of time down rabbit holes about markets or space, so a good documentary works too.
