Junior at UCSB | Econ & Accounting + French | Campus INVOLVEMENT

Ivy O
Ivy ONew

Hi! I’m a junior at UC Santa Barbara majoring in Economics and Accounting with a minor in French. I’m actively involved in campus organizations and student leadership, and I’ve studied abroad. I have firsthand experience navigating UCSB academics, getting involved on campus, and fully experiencing life in Isla Vista from community events and student culture to finding the right living situation. I love helping students understand what daily life here really feels like so they can feel confident and excited about their transition to UCSB.

Describe your college experience

I was an international student that graduated from an international high school, and came straight to california after that. During my first year I lived in dorms and explored california life, joining many professional organizations to fun clubs and trying surfing for the first time, a time where I first discovered French. During my second year I decided to go abroad because UCSB provides amazing study abroad opportunities and I managed to go abroad for even cheaper tuition for a whole year whilst earning college credit, I can now speak another language and have traveled all over and essentially discovered a new part of myself, I also was part of a program that gave me access to so many summits, and european exchange student socials. During my third year back in SB, I live off campus with all of friends coming back to such a beautiful nostalgic place and participating in greek life, doing side gig jobs, as well as participating in the student government as a leader, whilst still leisurely pursuing my business interests through club activities. PS: If your an econ & accounting major the school has direct connections with big firms and TREMENDOUSLY made it easy for me to secure a good internship by junior year summer. With all that said, my college life has been fire, and I'm currently looking forward to senior year living in Isla Vista.

Tip for future students

They talk about the housing being so hard to find, don't worry there will always be people subleasing or trying to look for roommates it's not that deep. And also despite UCSB having a notorious party school reputation there is a huge part of the university where academics IS THE MAIN CHARACTER always, hence why we're so employable, work hard play hard. I don't even go out that much, but having the option to go out whenever I want to is great. Also UCSB is very much a bubble, as downtown is farther down if you'd like to do shopping or any city like activities so be ready for that. During my first year I felt like I had no life outside UCSB, but being upperclassmen and having that off campus independent life which many pursue is also a great option. And also to find clubs literally search on instagram ucsb(whatever your interested in).

Favorite class

I love my accounting professor Scott Fulkerson, funny teacher that always talks about his experiences and has really straight forward teaching strategies that help me alot, and his prior career experience is enlightening. Also General Education classes with passionate teachers like Dwight Reynolds, so good.

Career goals

I will pursue a foundation in Finance in a large firm, and then work for an individual company earning a high income, to later then found a company and become self-sustaining. Everything else in between I'll figure it out on the way.

Ideal way to spend a free night

Oh I LOVE a sunset beach walk, especially where I live right now 10 min walk from the beach its absolutely out of this world, so nice when de-stressing and just wanting a little break. The perfect night is to grab an acai bowl, on a hot day near sunset time and grab a little blanket and sit on one of the dead tree trunks on the beach, or even spend the day on the beach and do downtown to get dinner feeling refreshed, downtown on a nice day feels like vacation.
