Rising Junior Greatest Campus Tour Guide
Hi everyone! My name is Gilberto Esquivel Ramirez, and I’m a second-year student here at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign majoring in Economics with minors in Business and Spanish. I’m also a first-generation college student, originally from Plainfield IL, and I’m super involved on campus from volunteering at local ESL programs to being active in ALPFA, a Latino business organization. I also run my own campus barber studio, where I connect with students from all walks of life. I’m passionate about mentoring others, building community, and making sure students feel like they belong here. I'm excited to show you around and share why I love being part of this campus!

Describe your college experience
As a first-generation college student, the transition to college was challenging at first. I didn’t have much guidance going in, so I struggled with imposter syndrome and figuring things out on my own. But over time, I found my community through organizations like ALPFA and by connecting with other students who shared similar backgrounds. I've grown a lot—both personally and professionally—by getting involved on campus, taking on leadership roles, and volunteering in the community. It hasn’t always been easy, but the support systems here and the opportunities I’ve found have made my experience really rewarding.
Tip for future students
One tip I always give is: don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s tutoring, office hours, or just talking to someone in your dorm—there are so many resources and people willing to support you, but you have to take that first step. I wish I had known earlier that everyone’s figuring things out too, and it’s okay not to have all the answers right away. Just stay open, get involved, and take advantage of what campus has to offer.
Favorite class
One of my favorite classes so far has been Children, Communication, and Language Abilities (SHS 120). As someone who grew up bilingual and faced speech challenges, the class really hit home. It helped me understand how language develops in kids and the role communication plays in learning and identity. It also gave me a new appreciation for the importance of inclusive education and support systems, especially for bilingual and immigrant families like mine.
Career goals
After college, I hope to build a career in commercial real estate, specifically focusing on affordable housing development and investment. As a first-gen student from a low-income background, I’ve seen firsthand how access to stable, affordable housing can change lives. My goal is to work on projects that empower underrepresented communities and help close racial wealth gaps through sustainable development and smart investment strategies.
Ideal way to spend a free night
On a free night, I love relaxing by cutting hair in my studio—it's my creative outlet and a great way to connect with people. If I’m not doing that, I’m probably hanging out with friends, hitting the gym, or watching a good movie. I also enjoy late-night talks and just unwinding after a busy week.
