First Year Business Economics and Statistics + Data Science @ UCLA

Hi! My name is Yangyang Xia and I'm a freshman at UCLA studying Business Economics and Statistics + Data Science. I come from Fremont, CA and went to a competitive high school so I feel really lucky to have ended up here. I'm a huge Bay Area sports fan (I want to work in the sports industry too) and I also love listening to music. I've also experimented a lot with different organizations on campus and would love to share what I've experienced so far.

Describe your college experience

Fall quarter has been super messy as I had to adjust to college life with all my classes, schedules, and clubs. It's a lot harder to make plans with people I fear, but people are a lot more open to meeting each other which is great. I feel like I've wasted a lot of time, but also gone out a lot, and I love the people that I've met so far. Winter quarter I've adjusted a lot more, found my main group, had lots of fun but also took on a more challenging coursework. I like the freedom a lot more compared to high school, it's taught me a lot of discipline!

Tip for future students

Try to go on more side quests, explore more things just for the sake of exploring them. Go to a new spot on campus every day and don't stress about anything that isn't worth to be stressed about.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been my Brain, Body, Society class. Because it's a year-long cluster class, I've made deeper connections with my classmates and I've learned cool things about the brain and philosophy that I chose to learn about through a GE!

Career goals

I hope to work as a sports analyst in the sports industry either for a professional sports league or organization, as I love sports and working with numbers.

Ideal way to spend a free night

If I'm energized and feeling great, I would love to go out with my friends and go on crazy side quests. If I'm tired and have things to do early tomorrow, I would love to stay indoors and hang out with my friends and watch a movie or play poker.
