Describe your college experience

Initially, my transition to college was a bit rough. Coming from California, I didn’t have the right clothes - I always thought beanies were just fashion statements, not necessities for surviving winter. However, once I got a good coat, I actually learned to love the cold. I went sledding for the first time, made snow angels, and fully embraced the winter experience. Who knows—maybe I’ll even learn to ski! Along with adjusting to the weather, as part of my transition, I’ve had to become more independent. I’ve had to learn how to set boundaries, hold myself accountable, and seek out resources when I need help. These experiences have allowed me to grow and feel more confident in myself.

Tip for future students

Utilize the little pockets of time you have—walking to and from class or the dining hall—to connect with people from back home and check in. Let people know when you're thinking about or missing them by leaving a voicemail or a quick text. This is a new experience for everyone, just as it is for you. Even if it’s not a long conversation, small gestures like these can mean a lot. I’d also recommend joining a bunch of clubs initially—you don’t have to stick with all of them, but it’s a great way to find people who share common interests. Plus, you’ll get to meet students from different grade levels who can offer guidance and support as you navigate this new experience.

Favorite class

So far, my favorite class has been EN 1: Equitable Inclusive Civil Infrastructure. I loved how it combined engineering with real-world social impact, showing how design choices can directly affect communities. It made me think beyond just the technical aspects of civil engineering and consider accessibility, sustainability, and equity. The class was also super engaging, with hands-on projects and discussions that connected engineering to broader societal issues. I've also really enjoyed my Intro to Economics class. It has challenged and debunked many of my previous assumptions about money and the economy, highlighting how human behavior drives economic systems and how everything is interconnected through cause and effect. I initially took the course to fulfill a HASS requirement, but I found it incredibly interesting and relevant. Now, I’m even considering minoring in economics!

Career goals

I plan to get my masters via the Tufts 5 year Master Degree Program, work under Civil Engineer for 3 years as to attain my own license, and then I can figure it out from there. I'd like work somewhere where there is less infrastructure and thus more opportunity for growth and creativity.
