Public Health Student | First-Gen Somali | Pre-Med
Hi! My name is Hibo, and I’m a member of the Class of 2026 from Seattle, WA. I’m studying Public Health at Brown on the pre-med track, with the goal of attending medical school. On campus, I’m a research assistant at Bradley Hospital, a Brown Wellness Peer Educator program facilitator, and a volunteer at our local free clinic. I enjoy discovering new shows, reading, and working out in my free time.

Describe your college experience
My transition to college involved adjusting to a faster pace of academics and learning how to manage my time more independently. Over time, I’ve found a strong sense of community through research, campus organizations, and mentorship opportunities. Being at Brown has allowed me to explore a range of interests while building meaningful connections.
Tip for future students
Take advantage of office hours and don’t hesitate to ask for help early on; faculty and staff are incredibly supportive. I also recommend exploring different classes during your first year. You might discover new passions you hadn’t considered before.
Favorite class
One of my favorite classes at Brown has been an Anthropology course called Suffering and Compassion. It explored how different cultures understand pain, healing, and care, and challenged me to think critically about the ethics of empathy and the structures that shape human experiences. The course blended theory with real-world relevance, and it deepened my interest in public health and medicine from a more humanistic perspective.
Career goals
After college, I plan to attend medical school and pursue a healthcare career.
Ideal way to spend a free night
On a free night, I enjoy grabbing dinner with friends, turning on a favorite show, or catching up on some sleep.
