Hi! I’m Sophia, a sophomore studying Biochemistry & Molecular Biology! My first year at MSU taught me so much, both academically and personally. I’ve loved getting to explore such a big campus, meet people from completely different backgrounds, and slowly find the places and routines that make MSU feel like home. At MSU, I’ve met some of my closest friends through Greek life and love anything that gives me an excuse to meet new people. You can usually find me grabbing food with friends, at the gym, attempting to be productive somewhere on campus, or talking way longer than I originally planned to. I love MSU and would be so excited to give someone a little glimpse into what college life here is actually like!

Clubs, organizations & involvement

During my freshman year, I briefly joined a sorority and became involved in Greek life. Although I ultimately decided not to continue with my chapter at the time I stayed very connected to the Greek community through the close friendships I formed with people in several different sororities. I attended events, supported my friends, and got to experience a lot of the community and friendships that Greek life offers. That experience is actually a big part of what made me want to go through recruitment again this year!

Describe your college experience

My transition to college was definitely an adjustment at first, especially learning how to balance harder classes while also making time for myself and meeting new people. I think my freshman year taught me a lot about independence and honestly a lot about myself. Some of my favorite parts have been the random memories I’ve made with friends and meeting people I probably never would have crossed paths with otherwise. Going into my sophomore year, I feel way more comfortable at MSU and I’m excited to get more involved to make it feel even more like home.

Tip for future students

I wish I knew coming into college that you really don’t have to have everything figured out right away. Yourplans can all change from what you may have orignially come up with and that’s completely normal. I think the best thing you can do is say yes to things, put yourself out there even when it’s uncomfortable, and not compare your college experience to everyone else’s.

Favorite class

My favorite class has actually been IAH 241E! Since most of my classes are very science and math focused, I loved having a class that let me use a completely different side of my brain. We got to explore creativity in ways I honestly hadn’t thought much about before like using different digital elements to create a creative art piece. It was a nice change of pace from my usual coursework a class where I genuinely looked forward to seeing what we were going to do next.

Career goals

I’m majoring in Biochemistry and after college I would love to work in forensic science, specifically as a forensic DNA analyst. I’ve always been interested in the idea of using science to solve real-world cases and I love that the career combines biology with investigation and problem-solving. Eventually, I’d love to work in a crime lab and be able to contribute to cases in a meaningful way!

Ideal way to spend a free night

Honestly, my ideal free night depends on my mood! I love getting dressed up and going out with my friends, but I’m equally happy having a super chill night in, ordering food, watching a movie, and just chatting about life. As long as I’m around my friends I’m pretty easy to please :)

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite spot on campus is probably the Dairy Store! I feel like it’s such a classic MSU spot, and I love going there with friends to get ice cream especially when the weather is nice. It’s one of those little things that makes campus feel more like home and less like I’m just there for classes.
