Finding My Place Between Business, Sports & Bulldog Spirit

Hey! I’m Addie, a second year student at UGA who likes to keep life busy. I’m on track to graduate in three years and am hoping to Double Dawg so I can earn my master’s in my fourth year. Between business, sports, campus involvement, and whatever new opportunity I decide to try next, I’m all about making the most of my time in Athens. And if you’re nervous about trying something new, chances are I’ve either done it myself or know someone who has, so I’m always happy to help make UGA feel a little less intimidating.

Describe your college experience

My transition to college was a little shaky at first as I dealt with illness and family challenges during my freshman year. However, the support I received from UGA staff helped me adjust and become more involved on campus. Since then, I have joined the club water polo team, become involved with UGA Miracle, earned a position on the UGA Miracle board, and been accepted into the Terry College of Business. I am also continuing to push myself outside of my comfort zone by trying new activities, such as intramural volleyball. Overall, my college experience has taught me how to be resilient, get involved, and take advantage of new opportunities.

Tip for future students

One thing I wish I knew before starting college is that the first friends you make do not have to be your forever friends. Meeting so many new people while balancing classes and activities can feel overwhelming, and it is easy to put pressure on yourself to make every friendship work. If a friendship does not feel right, you do not have to force it. There are so many wonderful people on campus to meet, so give yourself time to find the people who truly make you feel comfortable and supported.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been MIST 2090 because it helped me realize how much I enjoy Management Information Systems and that I could see myself pursuing it as a career. I especially enjoyed the problem solving activities and learning practical Excel skills, which I now use to organize assignments and information in my other classes. I liked that everything we learned had a clear, real world application.

Career goals

I am not entirely sure what I want to do after college yet, but I would love to pursue a career in sports analytics. With my MIS major and Sports Management minor, I feel like that field combines two things I really enjoy: working with numbers and sports. I have always loved analyzing information and finding patterns, and I am also a little sports obsessed, so a career where I could bring those interests together would be really exciting to me.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night is simply being with friends. I enjoy going out to grab dinner, staying in for a quiet movie night, or playing sports together. I am pretty flexible when it comes to plans; as long as I am spending time with people I enjoy, it is usually a good night.

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite spot on campus is the Main Library. I love UGA’s historic character, especially on North Campus, where you can really see the university’s deep roots. The library is one of my favorite places because there is truly a space for everyone; each floor has its own unique atmosphere depending on whether you want a quiet place to focus or a more collaborative study area. The main floor has plenty of study rooms, whiteboards, and even monitors available for students to use. Plus, with Einstein Bros. and vending machines nearby, it has everything I need in one place, making it my go to spot to study on campus.
