Hi my name is Max Carlson and I am a 4th year UGA student majoring in Regenerative Bioscience with the intention on going to graduate school to earn my phd in Biochemistry and lead research focused on curing/treating health issues. I would also love to earn my M.D. in internal or functional medicine one day. On a more personal note, I enjoy hanging out with friends and family, as well as, running and playing such sports as basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, etc.

Describe your college experience

The first couple of years I focused on the academic side of things much more so than the social. The second year I worked two jobs, one at the Athens YMCA and the other at the UGA golf course, both of which took up a lot of the time I could have been using for school work. I also developed epilepsy this year and had to move back home with my parents which, coincidentally, live in Athens and allowed me to continue attending UGA. Fortunately my tonic clonic seizures have been controlled by medications, however, I still have the occasional awareness ones. Last year (Junior year), I focused on balancing both the academic and social areas in my life via homework for ~1-2 hours a day and Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) respectively. I also worked a student research assistant job 20 hours a week last year and greatly enjoyed it.

Tip for future students

Be sure to meet with your advisor as much as possible. Also, be sure to take breaks from school to socialize and do whatever else you enjoy that’s constructive.

Favorite class

Biochemistry (BCMB 3100) because I learned many reasons for how the body functions and can apply it to much of what I experience physiologically. I can also use it to help other people solve their questions about the body.

Career goals

I hope to lead research in Biochemistry in order to discover treatments for health issues.

Ideal way to spend a free night

I enjoy watching a movie/show, as well as, hanging out with friends and family.

High school or secondary school

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite spot on campus is probably the Law library because north campus and the building are both beautiful.

Meeting point
