Hey everyone! I’m currently a junior at UCSB and hoping to major in Financial Mathematics and Statistics. A few things about me: I enjoy playing volleyball, doing arts and crafts, and baking whenever I have free time. I love being creative, whether I’m making something new or trying out a new recipe!

Clubs, organizations & involvement

I am currently involved with the Vietnamese Student Associaton (VSA) and Kapatirang Phlipino (KP) clubs at UCSB. These student organizations celebrate Vietnamese and Filipino culture, while also providing opportunities to build a sense of community through mentorship, cultural events, social activities, academic support, and also community outreach. Anyone is able to join, and everyone is super friendly and welcoming :)!

Describe your college experience

My transition to college has been both challenging and rewarding. I have learned how to become more independent while balancing my classes, work responsibilities, and personal life. During my time at UCSB, I have also explored different academic and career interests, which has helped me better understand my goals. Becoming involved with the Vietnamese Student Association and Kapatirang Pilipino has helped me meet new people, connect with different cultures, and feel more connected to the campus community. Although adjusting to college has not always been easy, the experience has helped me become more responsible, adaptable, and willing to step outside of my comfort zone.

Tip for future students

One tip I would share with incoming students is to try as many new things as possible. College is the perfect time to explore different clubs, activities, classes, and opportunities because many students are also eager to meet new people and become involved. I would also encourage students to network by building genuine relationships with classmates, professors, advisors, and campus organizations. These connections can lead to valuable opportunities, such as internships, jobs, mentorship, and academic support. Most importantly, do not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, because trying new things can help you discover interests and opportunities you may not have considered before.

Favorite class

My favorite classes have been some of the art history courses I have taken because they explore different cultures, traditions, and historical perspectives. Two of the five art classes I have taken also included field trips to places outside of campus, such as Los Angeles. These trips allowed us to see artwork and cultural sites in person and fully immerse ourselves in what we were learning. I especially enjoyed this hands-on experience because it provided a refreshing change of pace from a traditional lecture-based classroom.

Career goals

After college, I hope to secure a full-time position in financial operations after graduating, where I can apply my analytical and problem-solving skills to support an organization’s financial processes and overall success.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night is relaxing at home, especially after a long day of classes, work, and going to the gym. I enjoy having time to unwind, watch a show or movie, eat something I like, and recharge for the next day.

Favorite spot on campus

Some of my favorite places on campus are the UCEN, the Student Resource Building (SRB), and the science buildings. I enjoy these spaces because their interiors are visually appealing and create a comfortable environment for studying or relaxing between classes. They also tend to have quieter, less crowded study areas, which is especially helpful during exam season when the library becomes overly packed.
