Ava - UCLA Chemical Engineering Major and Club Volleyball Student Athlete

Hi, I'm Ava and I am a second year chemical engineering major at UCLA! I love art, volleyball, the outdoors, and I love being a Bruin! At UCLA, I play club volleyball, do research in a chemistry lab, engage in engineering technical projects, and tutor K-12 students. I also love playing sports at the recreation center, going on walks around campus, and having delicious meals with friends. I look forward to meeting you!

Describe your college experience

My college experience at UCLA thus far has been a great balance of academics, professional experience, extracurricular activities, and creating lasting friendships. A day in my life can consist of everything from performing experiments in lab to playing beach volleyball while watching the sunset. While engineering has definitely entailed a rigorous course curriculum, my UCLA experience overall has been full of learning and fun.

Tip for future students

My #1 tip for future students is to get involved as much as you can! There are so many amazing clubs and opportunities at UCLA that everyone should take advantage of. Another thing I wish I knew before starting college is all the academic resources there are to help you in your classes. Peer tutoring, review sessions, office hours, and study groups are all such great ways to get support!

Favorite class

My favorite class at UCLA has been organic chemistry. I had a really great professor who emphasized the real world applications of the topics we were learning, which made the class so engaging!

Career goals

My main career interests are in renewable energy or sustainable materials. I care a lot about sustainability, so I'd love to pursue a career in these fields. I also am interested in cosmetic chemistry, so working for a make-up or skin care brand would be so exciting!

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night would be to host a game night with my friends, get ice cream, and watch a movie!

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite spot on campus is Janns grass. I spend at least a few minutes a day laying on the grass and taking in the beautiful UCLA views.
