Hi there! I'm Moirin, entering my third year at UCSB with a double major in History and Communication with the addition of the Honors Program. Aside from academics, I am deeply involved in my management work with the Department of Recreation, as well as my technical work in Isla Vista lecture halls. I am a leader in the club sport community here at UCSB as Captain of the National championship-winning women's rugby team, a Student Manager for all sport clubs, and the sole representative for Sport Clubs for the Recreation Governance Board.

Describe your college experience

I am beyond grateful to say I'm in the place that I'm in now; I feel useful and creative through my work with the Recreation Department, I am the captain of a National championship-winning rugby team after only playing for two years, and my classes give me passion and meaning. My first few quarters were filled with fight or flight mode - I even considered transferring. UCSB sensed my panic, and quickly every puzzle piece I was worried about fell into place. I got multiple jobs, I grew into my rugby community, and found courses of study that were a perfect fit for me. After debating between the east and west coast, I know that right here is where I'm supposed to be making an impact in this very moment.

Tip for future students

Even if you have all the tools, support, and optimism, the transition to higher education will still be daunting and filled with risk. What became apparent to me quickly throughout my transition into college is that this uncertainty is in fact just opportunity hidden by a cloud of liminality. Hastily you will find that college is about much more than a few hours of class per week. Rather, it is a holistic social experience that puts the world itself at your fingertips. Don't be afraid to be afraid, be shameless in your pursuit of the new you!

Favorite class

There is no possible way to choose between History of Chinese Thought and Law Enforcement and Community. Both classes did exactly what higher education is meant to do: fundamentally reshape one's understanding of the world. These two also highlighted the promise of Social science and Humanities: development of critical thinking, which UCSB faculty demonstrate a steadfast commitment to.

Career goals

Since high school I have had one end goal: to be a changemaker in women's sports. With some hard work and lovely people, I've been able to make a name for myself in the club sport and recreational community here on campus, bringing me one step closer to my ultimate aspiration to be an administrative power house in professional sports such as women's rugby.

Ideal way to spend a free night

A quiet walk through IV is always my move, whether I'm alone or with a few close friends. If I'm feeling like getting out of town, free outdoors movie nights at the Santa Barbara Courthouse are a must!

Lowell High School, an elite public magnet school with competitive edge and outstanding college admissions pathways.

Favorite spot on campus

UCSB's hidden gem is without a doubt the HSSB, or Humanities and Social Sciences Building. My go-to to lock in for long readings or essay brainstorming, HSSB is filled with the perfect nooks and crannies for my studies. This location is also overflowing with the best staff UCSB has to offer, as the Humanities Department is known for their intimate, relatable faculty.
