Hi everyone! My name is Ana Dokianos, and I am a sophomore at the University of Virginia. I am studying a double major in History and Foreign Affairs. I was born and raised in New York City; however, most of my family lives in Europe. A couple of fun facts about me are that I speak four languages, I love to play competitive chess and was a chess tutor throughout high school, and I love to ski and play volleyball! During my free time, I love being surrounded by friends, having fun, and going on walks​/​hikes! Lastly, I love to travel and see different cultures and experience different cuisines!

Describe your college experience

As an out-of-state student coming to a large state school, I was worried that it would be difficult to fit in. I couldn't have been more wrong. I have had such a positive experience at UVA so far. I have met amazing people and professors, and the community is incredibly welcoming. UVA is truly a "work hard, play hard" environment where both the academics and the social scene are exceptional. The transition was smooth and easy, and after just two weeks in Charlottesville, I already felt at home. I have learned so much about myself over the past year because of my experience at UVA. The sense of community here is truly something special.

Tip for future students

Be open-minded. This is the most important thing. It's important to go into college with an open mind when it comes to trying new things, picking out classes and meeting new people. Another tip I have is to always say "Yes" to everything.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been The History of the Cold War. I loved the content because I found it incredibly interesting. The readings my professor gave us were also engaging, and many of them came from his own book. It was a smaller class of around 60 students, which allowed the professor to be extremely engaging and always encourage questions and discussion. Overall, I really enjoyed the course, and I found the material fascinating from start to finish.

Career goals

I hope to work in the U.S government as a Foreign Service officer or as a diplomat.

Ideal way to spend a free night

I would definitely spend my free time with my friends. Some of my favorite things to do are hanging out in my apartment, cooking dinner together, and watching a movie. We also love going out to dinner, exploring Charlottesville, or going out on the weekends.

West Range is my favorite spot around grounds. I like it because it is still pretty underground, has good food, and is a nice place to study, with others around.
