Liam - Third Year Math Major
My name is Liam, I am a third year mathematics theory and computation major at UCSC. I lived on campus at Porter College for two years, and know my way around the school very well. I have also utilized many campus resources and can offer insights as to what this school has to offer, and what it means to be a slug!

Describe your college experience
My transition into college has been nothing short of life changing. I spent high school as an introvert without many friends. I didn’t like school very much, and felt pressured to apply to college by my family. Since starting my journey at UCSC though, both of these things have changed. The academics here are engaging, and have made me excited to learn and go to class. On top of that, the culture fosters social interaction, and forces even the most introverted people to put themselves out there and make friends.
Tip for future students
It’s easy to get caught up in your social life when you first start university. My biggest tip to any incoming student is to remember that you are a student first, and make sure you are staying on top of your academics.
Favorite class
My favorite class that I have taken at UCSC was MATH 11B, which is calculus 2. The math department here is great, and the professor who taught this class did a great job at making the course feel engaging and practical, which is something that many math educators struggle to do.
Career goals
I hope to go into Data Science with a focus on conservation. I also love to produce music and breed reptiles, so either of those as a side hustles or potential careers would be awesome.
Ideal way to spend a free night
My favorite way to spend a free night in Santa Cruz is downtown. Especially on weekends, downtown Santa Cruz is always lively, and there’s bound to be something fun going on.

Favorite spot on campus
My favorite spot on campus is the hidden trampoline in the woods near Kresge. I love this spot because only the students know about it, and theres always some people hanging out there.
