UCLA | 2nd Year | Public Affairs Major | Pre-Law

Hi! My name is Catia, and I’m half-Filipino and half-Vietnamese. I'm a second-year undergraduate at UCLA majoring in Public Affairs on the pre-law track. On campus, I’m involved in clubs and organizations that foster my leadership, culture, and career goals. After completing my undergraduate, I hope to attend law school with the plan of becoming a corporate attorney.

Describe your college experience

My transition to college was fairly easy, as I had been looking forward to experiencing my own, independent life. The first week after move-in was the biggest adjustment for me, because it was a much different social scene than what I was used to. However, once I figured out my routine and what works for me, it was really great from there on! I met a lot of amazing people and found clubs that were interesting and beneficial for me. The academic rigor is the most difficult for me, as the quarter system was a big adjustment. It really came down to making a schedule and knowing what I should prioritize.

Tip for future students

Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and try new things, but it's also important not to lose yourself within that process! Everything you experience in college will be an adjustment, and it's okay if life takes time to smooth out.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been PUB AFF 116: Qualitative Methods for Research, which is a requirement for my major. It was a very fun and engaging course, as we actually got to go out in the field and conduct our own research.

Career goals

Corporate Attorney

Ideal way to spend a free night

If my week was exhausting, I love to simply let myself relax and get some extra sleep! If my week was good or I just need some fun, I enjoy going out with friends to do some social activities!

High school or secondary school

Oxnard Middle College High School; Oxnard, CA

Previous college

Oxnard College: I did dual-enrollment, so I completed my IGETC during high school, but I wasn't considered a transfer student. However, all of my credits transferred over very smoothly, and I had no issues with this.

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite spot is the Charles E. Young Research Library (YRL)! It’s a very calm and relaxing area. I love studying there, becauuse there are many areas you can study in groups or solo. There’s also a cafe on the first floor, so I enjoy getting a drink or food before studying.
