Hi everyone! I'm a senior at Duke pursuing an English major and Psychology minor. I've spent the last three years as a member of various organizations around campus, with my activities including sportswriting for The Chronicle, captaining club and intramural sports, being an orientation leader ad project director, captaining in and running a 150-person trivia league, studying abroad, and being a member of Pancakes for Parkinson's. I'm originally from Western Massachusetts, but I've fallen in love with Durham and the triangle area and consider myself very knowledgable about the surrounding area. Would love to get to meet you!

Describe your college experience

Duke is one of the most important things in the world to me. I had a pretty rough first year, adjusting to college and moving away from home was a really hard transition to me, and wanted to transfer closer to my home friends after my first semester. However, I came out of my shell, found out how amazing so many people here are, chilled out a little bit, and matured more than I ever could have hoped. My past two and a half years have been the best of my life, getting to become a part of the Duke community and carve out my niche in it is one of the most special experiences I've ever had.

Tip for future students

Just go into it with a good mindset! Say yes to things, be open to making new friends, go outside of your comfort zone, and know that people are on your side. The big thing that flipped a switch for me was when I was told that everyone is rooting for me — that person that you just met really wants to think you're a cool person, that teacher in the class you're struggling in wants to help you learn, your interviewer wants you to be a good candidate, and your friends and parents want you to do well and be happy. If you think about Duke or any school like that, you'll find success

Favorite class

Psych 216: The Science of Happiness. This class was one of the most useful and enlightening classes I've ever taken. The information was obviously very applicable to real life and it helped me become a happier person, but the special part of it was the classroom environment. The whole class was genuinely interested in making their lives happier, and it made for a very fulfilling classroom environment, where everyone was sharing about their lives, and we all grew much closer as a result of the class.

Career goals

Don't have it fully ironed out yet! I'd love to do a lot of things. I'd be very interested in going to law school sometime, but I don't want to do that immediately after undergrad. I'd love to teach English abroad, and potentially go into education in the long run. I'm also interested in potentially getting a PhD in English, and going into academia.

Ideal way to spend a free night

6:30-7:30 — go out to dinner with friends in Durham 7:30-8:00 — walk back to one of our houses 8:00-8:45 — bake some sort of elaborate dessert 8:45-9:30 — play some sort of game 9:30-10:15 — go out for a walk and chat 10:15-end — hang out around a little campfire in our backyard
