Hi! I'm Monique, a rising junior at Tufts majoring in Cognitive and Brain Science. I'm originally from Beijing, China, and I'm currently exploring a future career in speech-language pathology. As an international student, Resident Assistant, and Peer Advisor, I've had the chance to help students navigate academics, campus life, and find community at Tufts. Describe your college experience

As an international student, my transition to college took longer than I expected. When I first arrived, I was nervous about everything. Adjusting to a new country, culture, and social environment was challenging, but along the way I met so many kind people who made Tufts feel like home. From pre-orientation peer leaders who checked in on me when I was feeling down, to strangers who offered to help when I was carrying too much luggage, I always felt supported. Even the dining hall staff where I work have become like family. One thing I especially appreciate about Tufts is that students are ambitious without being competitive in a negative way. Everyone seems to be pursuing their own path while cheering each other on. Overall, Tufts has been a place where I've grown a lot, both academically and personally, while being surrounded by a genuinely caring community.

Tip for future students

One thing I wish I'd known earlier is how easy it can be to take classes at other universities in the Boston area through cross-registration. I've taken courses at Boston University, and it has completely expanded my perspective and allowed me to explore interests that weren't available in my major. Boston is basically one giant college campus if you're willing to take advantage of the opportunities around you!

Favorite class

American Sign Language classes! It introduced me to Deaf culture and the Deaf community, gave me opportunities to attend community events, and completely changed the way I think about communication and language. It's also one of the most interactive and rewarding classes I've taken at Tufts.
