Columbia Chemistry Sophomore and Fiddler happy to show you around campus!

I'm Ronen, a freshman at Columbia studying Chemistry with a 3.97 GPA. I've spent a lot of my life pursuing chemistry research, and I'm currently a Guthikonda Fellow working on graphene nanoribbons. Outside the lab, I play bluegrass and Irish fiddle, lead a division of the Columbia Locomotives club, and captain intramural sports teams. I grew up in Pasadena, CA and love talking about my Columbia Expierence.

Describe your college experience

The transition to Columbia was a big jump, going from Pasadena to New York City is its own adventure, but I've loved every part of it. I dove straight into research and was selected as one of three students for the Guthikonda Fellowship to do full-time chemistry research. Beyond academics, I've found a great community through the Locomotives club and intramural sports. Columbia has a way of throwing incredible opportunities at you if you're willing to go after them.

Tip for future students

Reach out to people who are doing what you want to do early, and explore neighborhoods beyond campus. Everyone here will really take the time to mentor you.

Favorite class

I've really enjoyed my first year chemistry courses, the lecturers I've had have been really good at explaining material, and I've found the material very engaging.

Career goals

I'm currently deciding between pursuing a PhD in chemistry, or applying to med-school.

Ideal way to spend a free night

Playing fiddle at a local Irish or bluegrass session somewhere in the city finding a good pub or community space with live music, jamming with whoever shows up, and staying way too late.
