Your Guide to Rhetoric, Politics, and Design at UC Berkeley

Zara G
Zara GNew

Hi, I’m Zara! I’m a student at Cal, studying Rhetoric and Global Studies. I’m passionate about the intersection of politics, design, and philosophy. At Berkeley, I have run political campaigns, participated in competitive public speaking, and led the creative team for the Berkeley Political Review. It may seem like a lot, but I’ve still made time to have fun, enjoy live music, and find an amazing group of friends. I’m excited to share what makes this campus special!

Describe your college experience

You really can do anything at Berkeley. The school is filled with opportunities, from classes and clubs to internships, allowing you to become the professional you aspire to be. However, it’s deeper than that—you can also become the best version of yourself. You can transform how you present yourself and find your community among your friends, your clubs, and your version of Berkeley. Being at Cal means you’re also in the Bay Area, which allows you to experience one of the greatest cities in America. Even though the school is tough, you will become tough with it. Can you tell I love this place?

Tip for future students

My first piece of advice is JOIN A CLUB! For me, that's what's defined my social life here at Cal. It's such a large community that you need to find your people ASAP.

Favorite class

It's a heafty title, but my favorite class at Berkeley has been Approaches and Paradigms in the History of Rhetorical Theory II. It's a rhetoric class that teach why indeviduals are compelled to either feel nothing, empathetic, or moved to action thr

Career goals

After my undergrad, I plan to work in political campaigning for a few years before going to Law school.

Ideal way to spend a free night

If I have a night that’s actually free, my ideal way to spend it is with my friends. We enjoy going to see our friends' bands, attending DJ sets, exploring San Francisco, or just hanging out at one of our places.
