Describe your college experience

Transitioning to Berkeley was definitely a big adjustment, especially moving from Texas and balancing Division I athletics with academics at such a competitive school. At first it was intimidating, but over time I found my community through track, classes, and getting involved on campus. My experience so far has pushed me to become more independent, disciplined, and confident in myself. I’ve met people from so many different backgrounds and learned a lot both inside and outside of the classroom.

Tip for future students

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there early. Go to events, talk to people in your classes, and explore the city because Berkeley has so much to offer beyond academics. Also, time management is everything here, especially if you’re balancing a busy schedule. Give yourself grace during the transition because everyone is figuring things out, even if it doesn’t seem like it.

Favorite class

One of my favorite classes so far has been Anthropology 3AC with Professor Cohen. He’s incredibly passionate about what he teaches and has done extensive work in the field, which makes the class really engaging and insightful. I especially enjoy learning about the connections between culture, society, and healthcare, and hearing about his real world experiences has made the material feel even more meaningful. Taking his class also made me interested in taking his medical anthropology course in the future.

Career goals

After college, I hope to pursue a career in healthcare where I can combine patient care with advocacy and public health awareness. I’m interested in nursing and potentially becoming a CRNA in the future. I want to work in spaces where I can make people feel cared for while also helping address larger health inequalities in underserved communities.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal free night is usually going out with my friends on the weekends, whether that’s going to frats, exploring San Francisco, or just being around good energy and people. I also love going to see plays or finding good food spots around campus and the Bay Area. After balancing school and athletics all week, it’s nice to have time to relax, have fun, and enjoy everything Berkeley has to offer.
