ASU Freshman, Athlete & Oakland Native Who Loves Campus Life
Hi, I’m Kekoa! I’m a freshman at Arizona State University majoring in Business Management. I’m originally from Oakland, California, and I’m African American. I’m very outgoing and found it pretty easy to make friends when I got to ASU, but my roommate is more shy and introverted, so I also understand that experience and how different the transition can feel for people. I play ASU Club Rugby, love sports, and enjoy being on campus. I’m easy to talk to and excited to share what student life at ASU is really like.

Describe your college experience
My transition to college has been exciting and a big adjustment in a good way. Coming from Oakland to ASU was a change, but I’ve enjoyed meeting people from all over, getting involved in sports, and learning how to balance classes, activities, and independence. ASU feels big, and Arizona culture is very different from the Bay Area, but once you find your spaces and your people, it starts to feel like home away from home.
Tip for future students
Get involved early and don’t be afraid to talk to people. Everyone is looking to make friends, even if it doesn’t seem like it. Also, explore campus more than you think you need to — it helps you feel settled faster.
Favorite class
My favorite class so far has been Excel for Business because it feels practical and useful for real life. I also really enjoy my English class. None of the classes feel overly difficult, but learning time management — especially being away from my helicopter mom for the first time — definitely took some getting used to. That adjustment has been a big part of college, and balancing everything has helped me grow and become more independent.
Career goals
After college, I hope to work in business management or entrepreneurship. While I don’t yet have a clear path and know that will unfold over the next few years, I’m especially interested in negotiating, creative problem solving, and sales. I’m a sports enthusiast and a natural leader, and I want to build a career where I can work with people and put those skills to good use.
Ideal way to spend a free night
Going to ASU football games is everything you imagine and more. I also like walking around campus or renting electric scooters, going to parties (not many that Freshman have acess to :+), and hanging out with friends. A lot of nights you’ll find me on College Ave grabbing food or just spending time at friends’ dorms.
