UMD Tour Guide

Elsa S
Elsa SNew

Hi there! I’m a recent graduate from the University of Maryland, College Park, where I studied Spanish and Secondary Education. I’ve lived all around campus over the past four years each corner has its own charm! Along the way, I explored a bunch of fun electives like creative writing, philosophy, and even tap dancing. I also spent a semester playing on the Maryland club soccer team when my course load was lighter. Yes, UMD is big... but that’s part of the magic! There’s space for everyone to find what they’re passionate about and build their own experience, and that’s exactly what I got to do. I’m excited to share my love for UMD and help others discover what makes this campus so special.

Describe your college experience

Honestly, I started out a bit nervous and unsure if a big school like Maryland was the right fit for me. But once I started following my interests and joining clubs and communities that shared those same passions, I found my people and the campus started to feel a lot smaller and more personal. I’ve really come to appreciate the balance that UMD students have. Everyone is committed to their studies and works hard, but they also know how to have fun and really make the most of these core college years. Plus, Maryland sports are incredible! The energy and school spirit they bring to campus make it such a fun and unifying experience. I'm a Terp for life!

Tip for future students

My biggest tip is to just stay open to things! Whether it’s to new friends, new ideas, new classes, or totally new experiences. College is the perfect time to try things out and learn more about what you do (and don’t) enjoy. You don’t have to have everything figured out right away, and sometimes the things you least expect end up shaping your experience the most.

Career goals

When I came to UMD as a freshman, all I really knew was that I wanted to do something with languages and give back to the community whether that meant becoming a service worker, a translator, a tour guide, or something else. Over time, I found myself drawn to teacher other's my love for languages and ended up following the path to become a teacher! It wasn’t exactly what I had planned when I started college, but I’m so excited to say that after graduation, I’ve been contracted to be a high school Spanish teacher in MCPS.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night was usually a chill movie night in with my roommates, who I met second semester of freshman year and stayed close with throughout college. Other times, we’d go out to a bar on Route One or just explore the area. Honestly, College Park felt like a mini city... there was always something new to do, whether we were staying in or going out.
